Intersecting Horizons

Exploring the Nexus of Human Rights and the Socio-Environmental Agenda

When we discuss the socio-environmental agenda, we are inherently discussing human rights. This intrinsic connection forms the cornerstone of the work carried out by the Socio-Environmental Funds of the Global South (Alianza Socioambiental Fundos del Sur).

Consider the fundamental right of populations to inhabit their native environments, nestled within healthy and protected ecosystems. Yet, this relationship extends beyond mere rhetoric. It confronts the grim reality of violence faced by environmental and land defenders globally, particularly in the Global South.

From April 24 to 26, representatives of Alianza Socioambiental Fondos del Sur will engage in the Funding Futures Festival, an initiative spearheaded by the Human Rights Funders Network (HRFN). This event aims to strategize and envision new horizons for philanthropy in human rights.

During this gathering, Alianza will facilitate reflection sessions on the nexus between human rights and the socio-environmental agenda. Notably, it will mark the release of “Rapid Response Funds: Lessons learned in supporting Human Rights and Environment Defenders in Brazil” — a testament to collaborative efforts and collective resilience.

The Funding Futures Festival serves as a platform for funders to foster learning, connections, and novel philanthropic paradigms. Scheduled in Tbilisi, Georgia, this year’s edition gathers stakeholders worldwide to co-create fairer and more impactful funding ecosystems.

Themes such as climate, racial, and gender justice take center stage, reflecting the urgent need to address systemic inequalities. Through discussions, exhibitions, and research presentations, participants will explore the intersectionality of global justice movements and regional challenges.

For Alianza, the festival presents an opportunity to champion discussions on the intertwined nature of human rights and the socio-environmental agenda. Through innovative activities and interactive sessions, Alianza aims not only to conceptualize this nexus but also to strategize practical approaches, placing socio-environmental concerns at the forefront of philanthropic endeavors for human rights.

Earlier this year, Alianza members convened to delve into the nexus between socio-environmental issues and human rights. Through dialogue and reflection, participants acknowledged the intrinsic link between their work and broader human rights issues.

Protecting communities and their livelihoods emerges as a shared imperative, intertwined with safeguarding biomes and ecosystems. Examples abound, from strengthening community institutions to promoting food security and territorial governance.

In regions like the southern Philippines and the Peruvian Amazon, organizations like the Samdhana Institute and the Fondo Socioambiental del Perú provide vital support to indigenous communities, advocating for legislative rights and environmental preservation.

Furthermore, discussions underscored the critical role of local funds in addressing the real needs of communities, emphasizing sensitivity, comprehensiveness, and effectiveness in interventions.

In essence, the socio-environmental struggle is inseparable from the broader social agenda. This imperative compels us to act, to reflect, and to envision a future where environmental justice is intertwined with human rights. It is our call to action — a rallying cry for reflection and concerted effort.
