ABOUT US

We are living through a climate emergency and a global polycrisis — a convergence of environmental, social, and economic crises rooted in an extractivist model of development that privileges a minority, primarily in the Global North. For communities across the Global South, this translates into denied rights, devastated territories, and the erosion of ways of life that have protected vital ecosystems for generations.

Movements for climate and socio-environmental justice, led by Indigenous peoples, Black communities, women, youth, and local activists, are rising from this context. They demand that global responses to the climate and biodiversity crises also address the structural inequalities at their core — and affirm that the solutions must be shaped and led by those who are most affected.

Local and activist funds are key actors in these movements across the Global South. Acting as the financial arms of these struggles, these funds work to ensure that philanthropic resources reach the communities most vulnerable to climate and environmental crises. Unlike institutions managed from the Global North, they are deeply rooted in the territories where they operate, with legitimacy built through lived experience and strong relationships with local movements.

Each fund operates with its own national or regional structure, raising resources from diverse steams and redistributing them through mechanisms that are participatory, accessible, and culturally appropriate — including grants in local currencies, the use of native languages, and decision-making processes grounded in deep knowledge of the local context.

The Alianza Socioambiental Fondos del SurSocio-Environmental Funds of the Global South — is a pioneering alliance among several of these locally rooted funds, with presence in some of the planet’s most threatened biomes. It is a living, evolving network united by a common purpose: to significantly expand access to resources for grassroots groups and frontline communities whose knowledge, resistance, and solutions have long been marginalized by traditional philanthropic models.

How Alianza Works

Alianza operates across two complementary and deeply interconnected dimensions: on one hand, it strengthens its member funds through trust-building, peer learning, and collaboration; on the other, it engages with the broader philanthropic ecosystem to transform narratives, funding flows, and power dynamics.

In practice, this work takes shape across different areas:

  • strengthening locally rooted socio-environmental funds, through:
    • collective learning and the development of shared strategies that enable more effective responses to common challenges across diverse contexts
    • amplifying their voices and fostering joint efforts around shared causes
  • generating knowledge from practice, grounded in experiences and learnings from the Global South, through initiatives such as Voices of the South, a multimedia project bringing forward perspectives from member funds, and Funding from the Ground Up, an in-depth study on their operational models
  • influencing narratives and global debates on philanthropy and socio-environmental justice
  • building a coordinated presence in international decision-making spaces
  • and developing collective platforms that connect actors and strengthen ecosystems from the Global South, such as The Global South House, a space for political articulation, mobilization, and collaboration among Global South philanthropic actors.

where we are map

Alianza brings together a diverse group of established funds, including Casa Socio-Environmental Fund (Brazil), Fondo Acción Solidaria – FASOL (Mexico), Fondo Tierra Viva (Central America), Samdhana Institute (Southeast Asia), Institute Society, Population and Nature (ISPN)/Ecos Fund and FunBEA (Brazilian Fund for Environmental Education) in Brazil. It also includes expanding funds with a strong regional presence, such as Semilla Socio-Environmental Fund in Bolivia, Fondo Socioambiental del Perú in Peru, Fondo Emerger in Colombia, Fondo Ñeque in Ecuador, Fundo Tindzila in Mozambique, Environmental Justice Fund (EJF) in South Africa, Red Comunidades Rurales and Socio-Environmental Fund Plurales in Argentina, Pastor Rice Small Grant Fund in Southeast Asia, and Youth Climate Justice Fund, our only global and thematic fund, which supports youth-led projects and actions.

As a living system, Alianza can be seen as a fractal: it reflects on the global stage the consistent actions and values taking place at local and regional levels across the Global South. That is why it aims to be a strong and reliable presence in the field of socio-environmental justice, acting as a bridge between its member funds and the guardians of life, and promoting decolonial narratives grounded in respect and equity in philanthropy.
